SEPTEMBER
2003 I read some of Suzanne Sommers most recent book along with excerpts of the new South Beach Diet and discovered that they, along with many new studies, are all saying pretty much the same thing: Cut out sugar and white flours and lower the amount of carbs you eat. Pretty simple actually! My area of weakness is still lack of exercise, though I was thrilled to hear that they are now considering housework and chasing kids around as exercise! I do PLENTY of that! Eventually, I plan to add back in more fruit and the occasional breads or other things not on my list right now, but I am already feeling that this has become a life style change that I will stick with forever. I discovered Russell Stover sugar free candies (especially the peppermint patties!) that meet any need I may have for sweets and can seriously imagine myself never eating regular candy or candy bars again! My husband is within about 2 lbs of his goal weight and is getting compliments everywhere he goes. My daughter has gone back on Atkins after her very social summer and already lost 4 lbs in 3 days. This month I lost another 4 lbs bringing my total weight loss to about 21 lbs. It has seemed slow but it is steady and I am keeping it off. My husband and I recently celebrated our 21st anniversary and went to Black Angus for dinner. The waitress immediately recognized we were on Atkins when we told her to keep the bread, potatoes and dessert! We enjoyed a great meal of salad and steak and shrimp and ended up both losing weight in the morning! (The waitress also told us that she had just started Atkins and was excited as many of her friends had lost weight on it.) This last month, we celebrated more than a few birthdays and were able to pass on the cake and ice cream every time without any tears. We went to a birthday/BBQ today and enjoyed hotdogs and hamburgers (no buns of course!), hard boiled eggs (off the top of the potato salads!), lettuce and tomatoes and diet coke. We later laughed at how easy it has become to pass up the sugar. Now I am not saying that it will be easy as the holidays come up, especially with all the great baked goodies and candies, and especially since BBQ season will be over. BUT, we are feeling great and want to remember how good it feels to be where we are. A few moments of indulging our taste buds are NOT worth gaining the weight back. So, for now, things are looking good and we are enjoying our meals without guilt. The results speak for themselves. :-)
