OCTOBER 2003

This month has been a maintenance month for me. I have stayed generally within a pound or two up and down, which means I have found what it takes to maintain my weight. The good thing is that I have enjoyed lots of great meals and not felt like I was "dieting" at all. The bad thing is that I still want to lose more weight and need to cut out some of the extra carbs, hidden sugars and calories that are keeping me from losing.

I still haven't added exercise and know that would help quite a bit but not willing (yet) to give up my time for it. I bought some new jeans and was thrilled to be able to wear a size 14 easily. I have lots of energy and enthusiasm and am able to keep up with my kids most of the time. I am 44 yrs old and at that stage of life where I am beginning to see signs of perimenopause and hormonal changes, which though nothing serious, they do have some small affects on me. I have been experimenting with some different vitamins and supplements also, which can make it hard to know what my body is reacting to.

My husband reached his goal weight and has been able to keep it maintained while adding some extra things back into his diet. My daughter has lost a few more pounds but even more important has adopted this way of eating as more of a life change. She works in a camp kitchen where they get free meals and she has passed up donuts, cookies, breads and all the other no-no's and not complained at all. The cook has even offered to cook her things she can eat. She has also made it clear to other people what she is doing (Atkins) and found that most people are wonderful at helping her stick to her goals.

We watched the shows on TV by Dr. Phil as he explained and then chose people to be on his new "Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge" recently. He has great ideas that have little to do with any "food plan" other than what is common sense. I have to say that I like his no-nonsense approach and it will be interesting to see what kind of an impact his "challenge" will have on our society. He will definitely be raking in the bucks, though I truly believe after listening to him that his heart is to see people get control of this out-of-control problem we Americans have.

So, I keep my focus on health this month and trying to cut back in ways that will add up to weight loss.
