FEBRUARY 2003 - PARENTING IMPROVEMENTS MADE...

I feel as though I have done a better job of parenting this month - not perfect mind you, nor even close to where I'd like to be, but better none the less.

I started making an extra effort to spend more time with Isaac in direct one-on-one activities like reading a book, playing a game, or coloring. We seem to have a better relationship. He still doesn't like me sometimes, but that's normal. I'm so thankful I have my husband to help interject when things between Isaac and I get real harry. When Isaac chooses not to listen to me, he usually listens to Trevor. Things are looking up with Isaac and I expect they will continue in that direction.

Sabrina has also started making herself be known. She is 4 months old now and has "found her voice", meaning she has learned how to blow air real hard through her vocal cords so as to make a very loud noise - be it crying or squealing. When she is happy, she lets us know. Of course all these sounds make us laugh hysterically. And when she is not happy, she lets us know! These sounds can be quite disturbing. Sabrina has also been in a high need for my physical contact - she does not accept her dad very often to fill the closeness she desires.

I went through about 2 weeks of carrying her in my arms just about all day. I thought I was going to lose it. I love her dearly and love holding and cuddling her, but sometimes I just needed a break so I could get something else done (like the dishes!). I have a Snugli front pack, but I've observed that she only likes to be in it when she has new and interesting things to look at - such as when we're shopping. I've also noticed that at home she likes to be in a more cradled position. I had a Snugli brand newborn sling that we used when she was little, but she has now grown out of it. She loved being in the sling (after the initial couple day breaking in of course). With the knowledge of how she likes to comforted best, I went searching on-line for a new sling. I was not so excited about buying on-line mostly because it meant that I had to wait for it to be shipped to me - and I really wanted it right away. But after deciding that I could stick it out a few more days, I found (and purchased) what I feel is the best sling around - and it was well worth the wait! We now use the Adjustable Fleece Pouch found at www.kangarookorner.com. Every time I put it on, Sabrina smiles at me knowing she's going to be snuggled in close. I love how it feels so soft for her and for me (er, my shoulder that is). We had a couple days where we had to get used to this one too, as I carry her differently than I did in the old sling, but we have both come to rely on the pouch several times a day. Sabrina's need to be with me has been extremely high, and having her in the pouch allows me to comfort her the way we both want AND I have two hands free for whatever else I need to get done. This is starting to sound like an endorsement for the Adjustable Fleece Pouch - well, it's working so well for me it's hard not to want to spread the word. Their website is awesome too. It has all kinds of information on slings and pouches. They also sell several styles.

Like I said, I'm happy with the improvement I've made in parenting this last month. My relationship with both Isaac and Sabrina has been good. I still have more work to do, but isn't that the way with everything in life?

Until next month...Ginny
