JUNE 2004 - KIDS GROW OLDER BUT THE LOVE NEVER FADES

Why is it that when my children are ill my love for them grows at least ten-fold? Suddenly, nothing else matters…that stack of laundry can wait and the dishes can be done another day, my child needs me to be there to comfort him when nothing else feels good.

I felt this love tonight as I tucked in my 5-year old to bed. Nothing I was doing was helping him feel better until I turned out the lights, turned on his bedtime music and started singing along softly. After doing this for 5 minutes, I asked him how long he wanted me to stay. His answer, “For a long time.” How sweet, he was enjoying me rubbing his back and singing to him so much. I finally brought him enough comfort to relax and fall asleep, he wanted me to stay. That almost brought me to tears. It is not too often anymore that Isaac shows sentiment, and it was deeply touching that he wanted me there next to him.

It is moments like this that can keep me going through the rough times as a parent. I feel blessed to be so connected to my children through attachment parenting. I have found it more challenging to be attached with Isaac as he’s gotten older and past the infant and toddler stages, but through creatively making moments to be together with him we still have a special bond that’s only just changed with time. I am no longer able to carry him in a sling but I will always be able to carry him in my heart.
