NOVEMBER 2003 - COSMIC QUESTION CHALLENGE

Isaac (5 years) only just accepted wearing a band aid when getting a scratch or small cut.

Sabrina (12 months) likes to pinch my tummy fat when nursing.

Isaac still absolutely hates getting his face wet (bath, shower, and swimming).

Sabrina covers her mouth and cries (dramatically) when being told “no” or “hot”.

Why do our kids do what they do? Sometimes I am able to sit back and watch my children and am just amazed at their capabilities and how quickly they adapt. But on other occasions I wonder - why in the world do they do that? Think that? Act that way? Say those things? These are cosmic questions to me. Unanswerable. Kids have their own distinct personalities which shape who they are and who they will become. Oh yes, they are susceptible to picking up behaviors from their surrounding environment, but underneath it all is their core human being.

I have no educated wisdom on this subject, it’s just a topic that fascinates me. I’ve thought of these things even before I had children. My earliest recollection is asking the question - why are boys and girls different? Are they born that way? Or are they raised and taught different things that cause their behaviors to be different.

I challenge you to write a list (a short list is OK) of the things that your child does which you consider to be odd behavior, or of things which may be considered gender biased. Make a note of whether you think these behaviors have been learned or have come naturally to your child. If you’d like to send me your list I will publish it (whole or in part) with my next article. Maybe we could shed some light on these cosmic questions. Send your lists to
