DECEMBER 2002 - BATHROOM WOES AND JOYS

So both of my children enjoy going to the bathroom - each in their own way. Let's start with Isaac. He's your typical "guy" who likes to spend enormous amounts of time in the bathroom. He's 4. I don't know why he likes to spend so much time in there, and at first it really bothered me. In my opinion, you go into the bathroom to go pee or poop, you flush, you wash and you leave. In Isaac's opinion, somewhere between actually going to the bathroom and leaving the room is a great opportunity to play. Thankfully he doesn't play in the toilet anymore (that stopped VERY quickly), but he enjoys singing, making faces in the mirror, using the shower curtain as a punching bag and just general standing around. Why he feels he needs to spends his time doing this in the bathroom I don't think I'll ever know. I just know he'll grow up to be one of those men who sits on the toilet reading his magazine or newspaper - just because he can. Is this his sanctuary? Does it really start this young?

I know all boys do not do this, I witness this from my friends' little boys. I am always shocked when they tell their moms that they need to go potty, they leave the room and then return within a few minutes. I'm lucky to see my son before 10 minutes have passed! Like I said, this used to bother me - quite a bit actually.

I've come to get used to it since the more I bugged him to get out of the bathroom quickly, the longer it would take him - even if I stood there watching. It's easier on both of us if I just let it go. Now on to Sabrina, 2 months. She just started smiling and cooing for the first time a couple of weeks ago - and wouldn't you know it, her favorite spot for this is while she's on the changing table! Now this one I find quite pleasurable. She's so tiny and cute just laying there, and she is so happy that I'm cleaning her bottom for her. She looks up at me with this huge grin and then starts cooing and trying to make noises to let me know she's enjoying this time with me. Now I'm not sure exactly why she chooses the changing table to give most of her grins and coos - is it because she's getting a clean bottom? or because she has a direct line of sight to another smiling face? I'm not sure which, but it's pretty much guaranteed that whoever changes her diaper at the table with leave with a heart full of joy from her precious smiles. These are the woes and joys of potty time at my house.

The Great Character Development Workbook
Teach your children essential tools for life. Heidi's husband Nick is the author of this educational workbook for children.

The day before Thanksgiving, Isaac noticed something about his dad for the first time. He asked him point blank, "Dad, why do you have hair in your
nose?" Trevor was taken aback and didn't know how to respond very quickly,
but then said, "Yeah, that's pretty funny, huh? Should I trim it?" Isaac said, "Oh! I don't think you can fit scissors up there!"

Isaac used his index fingers and his thumbs to form a heart, then put it in
front of Sabrina's face - I mean only inches in front of her face. Quite
curiously I asked him what he was doing. He responded very sweetly by
saying, "I want her to look at me through my heart."
