JANUARY
2003
It is amazing
how easily influenced I am. I was watching Oprah a month or so ago,
and Bob Greene was on it again talking about weight loss stuff. Oprah's
theme for the day was about not following a specific diet plan but finding
something that works for you, adapting little things from different
places, which is what she does.
So she made a comment about eating oatmeal for breakfast. Well, I like
oatmeal and "real" oatmeal is healthy (not that instant stuff
with all the sugar). So someone told me (perhaps my sis Andee) that
the Old Fashioned kind is way better than the instant oats, so I tried
it. I added an entire banana and a smidge of brown sugar and yum! This
has been a new routine of mine, sometimes I add apple pieces and cinnamon
and yesterday I added fresh strawberries. OK - so that's breakfast.
The other thing Oprah and Bob mentioned was the upside down pyramid
- eating the most at breakfast and the least at dinner time. Up until
then, I had been having a SlimFast shake for breakfast and then eating
normal meals the rest of the day. I immediately switched it. I have
a very big filling oatmeal and fruit breakfast, a normal healthy lunch
(my latest favorite is chicken and veggie tortilla) and at dinner I
have the shake.
The final thing I took note of from Oprah and Bob was not to eat after
7 p.m. - or at least 3 or so hours before you go to bed. My husband
and I tried this once a few years ago but never stuck to it. So I decided
to try it again. No, not try it, but do it! Big difference.
So, now you know my eating routine for the last month. It really has
been working too. I know my stomach has shrunk, I'm not nearly as hungry
as I used to be and I'm eating a lot less and getting full.
I'm happy to say that since the beginning of November I have lost 22
pounds. I've even had to retire my favorite pair of jeans because my
gut just isn't big enough to hold them up anymore. Woo Hoo.
This little routine of mine is pretty easy, but certainly takes discipline.
I'm not perfect though. Sometimes I just want eggs or cereal for breakfast
and I might just skip the entire shake thing at dinner and have a peanut
butter and jelly sandwich. So it takes me a little longer cuz I had
the sandwich. Oh well. I don't feel like I am depriving myself because
sometimes I do allow myself to veer off, at least a little. And then
I'm right back on to being conscientious again. I actually look at the
ice-cream in the store and think "would I rather eat this or lose
another pound?" and I know I'd rather lose the weight. I think
for me the secret is to THINK before it goes into my mouth. If I do
that, I seems to make a lot better choices.
These small little things I've added to my routine really have been
working. One little thing at a time...just like one little pound at
a time.
