FEBRUARY
2004
It has been about 2 months since I wrote last and many changes have
occurred where my fitness and health is concerned. Both my kids ended
up getting sick for multiple weeks in December and so did I. A lot of
gym time was missed.
In addition, a painful condition of mine got worse and I was forced
to go see a doctor! Well, I forced myself. For about a year, every time
I lay down on my right side it hurts. Sleeping has been restricted to
the left side. I was actually getting accustomed to this but then my
leg was getting worse during driving and other times. To make a long
story short, I have bursitis. I'm currently in physical therapy for
a few weeks and am hoping for a good outcome.
In the midst of the madness, I had an epiphany about working out. I
wanted to go work out but didn't want to go to the gym. I had messy
hair, my workout clothes were dirty and I wasn't feeling social. I started
Googling for home workout equipment and found a very cool "Home
Gym" I would buy with my income tax return money. After a little
more looking, I found one at Costco that was even a better deal and
has a full range of all over body exercises. We borrowed my father-in-law's
pickup truck and brought the hundreds of pieces and hundreds of pounds
home. My wonderful husband took 1/2 a day off (plus another 4 hours)
to put the entire thing together. Yesterday was the first day I had
a real workout and OUCH am I sore today! Hurts so good. My husband is
now also working out, so I know it was such a good decision for both
of us.
Another crazy thing happened. The day I decided I wanted to get a Home
Gym, I realized the only thing I was missing was the treadmill. At the
gym I usually walk for 30 minutes, then lift weights. I decided I could
walk up and down my road, but it sure has been cold lately and I'm getting
spoiled on the treadmill. Later that same day, I was watching Oprah
and she was interviewing Charlize Theron about losing 30 pounds after
her role in "Monster". Charleze said "the treadmill was
my bestfriend". That phrase just resonated with me. About 3 hours
later I checked my email and my sister Andee said she was selling her
treadmill! I wrote her back in about a minute flat and two days later
went to her house to pick it up.
I officially have 2.5 months left on my yearly gym contract, but that's
fine. I enjoy going there to escape the kids, but I won't be renewing.
I'm excited about getting into a fitness routine at home and working
out with my husband too.
And to top it all off, last week I gave up coffee and diet coke! I'm
working on a 5 day headache here but hopefully it won't last much longer.
I know that if I'm drinking coffee and DC, I'm not drinking water. I
need to be healthier and am making a commitment to myself and my family.
