APRIL
2003
I think
this year officially can be called "The Year of Change" for
me. I had my hair makeover a couple of months ago, I've lost a bunch
of weight, and now I've made another huge step...
I celebrated my birthday a few weeks ago. My baby woke up early, so
I was downstairs drinking coffee by 6 a.m. (which is early for me).
In an effort to stay awake I clicked the TV remote and stopped on a
Denise Austin exercise program. I sat and watched her do some stretching
and her words (which are oblivious to me right now) really struck me.
She said something about getting more energy and that was enough to
get my attention. I've been wanting to join a gym for years now, but
seriously for about one year. Right after Carter was born last summer
I checked out my local gym and really liked it. It had all the essentials
for me, close to home, small atmosphere, friendly staffers. Unfortunately,
last summer was a blur - my husband took 6 weeks off, I recovered from
a c-section and when my husband went back to work he took an off-duty
job and was gone about 18 hours a day for the remainder of the summer.
So much for finding time to work out.
So back to my birthday. It hit me all of a sudden that I just might
be able to fit exercise into my life now. My nursing schedule gives
me multiple hour stretches and my husband is home at a decent time.
Yep, I was giving my self a membership to the gym for my birthday. Woo
Hoo!!!
I started with a week long trial (read: free) membership. I just wanted
to make sure that this really was going to work out for me and my schedule
and the needs of my family and home business. I found the staff really
approachable, the other patrons normal looking (I really don't want
to look at Cindy Crawford and Christy Brinkley running on the treadmill),
and the gym is only 10 minutes from my house. I haven't lifted weights
since college (12 years ago) and so I needed some reminders about the
machines. While I was concentrating on doing the exercise properly it
hit me all of a sudden...I'm NOT thinking of my kids...I'm NOT doing
something for the family, I'm ONLY doing something for me...Heidi...not
Mom...not Wife...but HEIDI!!! Yep, it hit me like a ton of bricks and
I was excited.
Unfortunately, then life happens. My husband worked late the next week,
my kids got sick, and our truck broke down. I ended up missing 2 weeks
but finally dragged my butt back in there and officially signed up.
I'm feeling less nervous each time I go, I am already starting to see
results via muscles I haven't seen or felt in years and I'm really just
enjoying "me" time.
As for the poundage, I've hit another milestone and am now below my
pre-pregnancy weight. I think this makes about 30 pounds lost since
November. Lots more to go but I'm taking one step at a time.
