JUNE
2004
Talk about a LONG hiatus from writing about fitness. My last article
was published in February...so over 4 months ago. Indeed a lot has changed.
I'm back on Diet Coke AND Coffee. I think I quit for at least 2 months
though, so maybe I've saved myself an extra hour or two of life :) There
were two reasons I gave up coffee; the first was to cut calories and
sugar by not drinking the flavored creamer and the second was to stop
the nasty sugar highs and lows that were hitting me. I noticed that
my weight had not changed once I dropped the creamer...so the next logical
step was to bring it back in my life (ha ha). Oh well. I don't have
the mood swings anymore, so maybe I'm not drinking as much coffee, not
sure. I did buy a French Press, which is most choice. It makes about
2 1/2 cups/mugs, so I only make what I drink (or drink what I make).
I didn't renew my membership at the gym, since I now have a home gym.
I'm seriously grateful for the change the gym (in town) made in my life
the last year. I learned a lot by talking to the staff and watching
other people. My confidence level went up and I really did enjoy all
the exercises. There are a couple leg machines I do miss though, but
I'm trying to get creative on my home machine and work the same muscles.
I do have to fight my husband for the home gym though! This was a complete
surprise because he showed NO interest in lifting weights in any of
his previous 35 years of life. Luckily for me I guess, he's only interested
in his biceps right now, so his time on the machine is pretty limited.
He's gained MULTIPLE inches in the last few months. Of course, he had
no fat to begin with, so his results just started popping out pretty
fast.
As for me, I'm still not working out as much as I'd imagined I would.
I think it more has to do with my mood though, and not the fact that
the machine is at home versus having to go out to the gym. I do miss
having kid-free time though, just focusing on myself. I would love it
if my husband and I could get into a rhythm and do certain things at
certain times. My problem as much as his; we just have so much we are
trying to accomplish and with two little kids it is so hard to get it
all done, let alone what must be done (dishes) versus those things that
are optional (lifting weights). Probably something we'll struggle with
for awhile, but in the meantime I'll keep trying and I figure any time
I have on the machine is better than nothing.
My actual weight has been the same for a very long time. My body has
changed though, so I know changes are being made. Muscles do weigh more
than fat, so that's fine. I did decide to jump start the weight loss
again though, and have added Slim Fast for my dinner the last week or
so and have dropped 5 pounds! Woo Hoo. It isn't too much of a sacrifice.
I love the results, so it is worth it to me.
Ya know I'm serious when at night I decide to drink half of a small
glass of wine instead of one full large one. Any extra calories/sugar
I can drop out of my life the better.
I hope all of you are inspired to make changes in your life too, even
if they are just small ones. Take the extra time to walk across the
parking lot to the store...park on the opposite side of the mall from
where you need to shop; eat 2 eggs and 1 toast instead of 3 eggs and
2 toast; add an extra glass of water at mealtime before you reach for
something else; brush your teeth after each meal to reduce snacking;
take dance breaks (my personal favorite..since I work at home!).
Good luck to all of you and don't give up.
