AUGUST 2003

I've been enjoying the last month or so although my weight loss has been ridiculously up and down, driving me batty. In all, I guess I'm down maybe 2 pounds from my last article. I think my body is looking and feeling better though. I'm seeing definite changes in my arm muscles and leg muscles although I'm having more problems with my left knee.

I have always had a funny bump on my knee and if it accidentally gets bumped I'm likely to scream. I saw an orthopedic doctor who told me I have two problems. He can do nothing about my bump, it happens sometimes when your legs grow fast, you are tall (I'm 5'10.5") and your leg muscles are well developed (I played basketball for years). Apparently it just grew that way.

What surprised me was when he was twiddling with my knee cap and I was wincing terribly. He said "does that hurt?" and I told him not really but it made me very uncomfortable, like my knee was going to pop out. He said numerous times "You are very apprehensive." I told him I trusted him but was still concerned. He told me my knee cap isn't aligned and is worn out more than it should be and has a tendency to slide out, which is why I'm apprehensive! Too funny, cuz I thought it was all in my head.

This also explains why I can't do squats and it hurts when walking down stairs. I'm not allowed to do any exercises that require me to bend my knee. He also recommended physical therapy, which is fine with me. Luckily - my gym is connected to a p/t place! Woo Hoo!!!

So, next week I'm going to start p/t and combine it with my normal workouts. At least that will make me a little more consistent with the workouts.

In other food news, I gave up caffeine a month ago. Well, actually just coffee. I think I went 10 days without a relapse on the coffee. I called my husband to talk me down, but he said he couldn't tell me not to drink it...so I did. I did stop making it at home every day though like I have for the last 7 months. I've had maybe 4 mochas since I officially gave it up!

I also quit drinking Diet Coke back 3 months ago. Took me probably 4-5 weeks before I relapsed. I now normally drink "Diet Rite" because it has no aspartame (which is why I gave up DC to begin with...not because of the caffeine) - Diet Rite has Splenda, which is my new big kick. You can cook with it, but I can't say I cook/bake so I'm just interested in the products that use it.

As for both Diet Coke and Coffee - I'm no longer consuming them in my home on a regular basis. Both are used sparingly and only if I'm desperate! I'm learning not to be so hard on myself but at the same time realizing that every drink or bite that I take affects my body somehow and I might as well try to make the most of everything that goes in me.
