![]() JUNE 2004 - READY FOR KINDERGARTEN...OR NOT Kindergarten is no longer as you may remember it. FEBRUARY 2004 - THE NOISE OF TOYS Overwhelmed and amazed by the sheer volume of the last round of Christmas toys, Stella and her husband have found creative ways to make alterations (Hokey Pokey Elmo received a c-section). Find out the benefits to silent toys that encourage thought, experimentation and effort. |
QUICK
STATS I have been an elementary school teacher for the last 10 years. During that time I taught fifth and sixth graders, and most recently kindergartners. Before becoming a teacher, I graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in journalism, and wrote for a small, local newspaper in Seattle. Choosing to teach rather than write professionally has been one of the best decisions I have made. I find the challenges and rewards of working with children to be invigorating, inspiring and fun. However, oddly enough, stopping teaching has also been one of the best decisions I have made. I am on a leave of absence for the current school year because I found that while I loved my job, I longed to be home with my own children. Being home with my family has been a gift. Our lives have slowed down to a much more enjoyable pace and to be honest, I find that I am a better parent. I do miss some aspects of teaching, but I don't miss leaving my sons in someone else's care, so that I could spend my day with other people's children. I believe that raising children cannot be done successfully in isolation. As parents we need to hear from others who have shared in the same joys, frustrations, trials and errors as we have. It is easy to forget sometimes in this fast-paced world that we need to measure our successes not in dollars and material goods, but in hugs and kisses, I love yous and snuggles. Parenting will always be the hardest job I will ever have, but the rewards are immense. ![]() My 4 1/2 year old son, Logan, had just watched a show about snakes on the Disney Channel and was fascinated with the way they can be milked for their venom. We discussed how a snakes fangs are hollow and that venom is stored in sacks on either side of the head. We also talked about how the venom is not milk at all, but poison. (I am still breast feeding my youngest, so I wanted to clarify this point, should Logan think that I am feeding his little brother venom.) A few hours later, when my husband got home, Logan ran to greet him and excitedly said, "Dad, dad. When I grow up, I want to be a firefighter, an astronaut and I want to nurse snakes!"
